Armenia is the smallest Soviet republic. It is just a fragment of historical Armenia. In about AD 300 Armenia became the first state to adopt Christianity, and the Armenian Apostolic Church still buttresses national identity. Long prey to invaders, Armenia was finally conquered in 1375 and ceased to exist as a separate state. For hundreds of years Turks, Persian, and later Russians fought over the territory. The Ottoman Turks forcibly uprooted Armenians during World War I; more then a million starved or were massacred. Independent from 1918 to 1920, Armenia succumbed once again, this time to Soviet force. By popular vote in 1991 Republic of Armenia became fully independent. Agriculture including cotton, vineyards and orchards, major industry chemical, mining, steel and paper.

Forest cover a third of Belarus whose landscape mixes hills and flatlands. The Belorussians, a Slavic people, have never ruled themselves in modern times. Kiev held the region until 1240; Lithuania and Poland governed into the 18th century; Russian rule began in 1772. The World War II brutalized the republic, which lost a quarter of its population, and virtually destroyed its economy. Now produces machinery, electrical equipment, flax and potatoes. An independent republic was declared in 1991.

Estonia, was least populous Soviet republic. Came under Germanic rule in the 13th century. Its people were shape by other occupier's culture - and the Reformation (Estonia has remained Lutheran). Sweden ruled Estonia from the late 1500's ceding it and other Baltic provinces to Peter the Great in 1721. Its capitol Tallinn was founded by Danes in 1219 and prizes its medieval architecture. Estonia was independent from 1918 to 1940, when it was annexed by Soviet Union. In August 1991 the Parliament voted to reassert the republic's independence. Estonian's population is now 30% Russian, causing Estonians to consider their culture endangered. Estonia has a skilled work force. Agriculture, dairy products, timber and petroleum are exporting.

Georgia is a rugged land between two Caucasus mountain ranges. Its culture is ancient; Greek myths placed the bound Prometheus on a Georgian peak. The written language dates from the fifth century AD, as does the capital Tbilisi. Queen Tamara presided over Georgia's zenith -a Caucasian empire- from 1184 to 1213, after which Mongols invaded. For centuries a battleground between Turks and Persians, Georgia which was Christian, turned to Russia for protection in 1783, only to be invaded in 1800s. Briefly independent, Georgia came under Soviet rule in 1921. Hydro-electricity, minerals, forestry and agriculture are chief industries. An independent republic was declared in 1991.

Plateau and desert dominate Kazakhstan, second in area to the Russian Republic. Kazakhs are a Muslim people of Mongol descent who speak a Turkic language. Largely nomadic, they emerged as a distinct people in the 15th century. Russia consolidated its rule over the region during the 19th century. During the 1950s Moscow unveiled the Virgin Lands program to cultivate what had been Kazakh pastures. Kazakhstan now grows a third of former Soviet Union's wheat. A million square miles of steppe desert, and mountains is reach in natural resources as lead, zinc, copper and oil. Independent was declared in 1991.

Latvians descend from ancient Balts and speak one of two surviving Baltic languages (Lithuanian is the other). The population is predominantly Lutheran, with a significant Roman Catholic minority. A coastal plain punctuated by hills, Latvia fell to Germanic invaders in the 1200s. Poland and Sweden divided the country in the early 1600s. Russia, elbowing in to gain a Baltic Sea "window" held all Latvia by 1795. Latvia was independent between the World Wars. Like Estonia and Lithuania. Latvia was independent between the World Wars. The Soviet Union annexed the Latvia in 1940. Industrial and urban makes machinery, scientific instrument and consumer goods. Latvia declared its independence in August 1991.

Lithuanians call their flat country the amber land; it mines much of the world's supply of this unique golden material. Its language retains many aspects of its ancient Indo-European languages. The republic's population, 80% Lithuanian, is predominantly Roman Catholic. After resisting Germanic invaders in the 13th century, Lithuania emerged as a grand duchy joined to Poland through the Lublin Union in 1569. In the 15th century it was a major power of central Europe, stretching from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Russia ruled the Lithuanians after partition of Poland in 1795. The nation gained independence following WW1 but was forcibly annexed by USSR in 1940. Lithuania declared independence on March 11, 1990. The economy is based on livestock raising and manufacturing.

As an ethnic group Moldovans do not exist. The people of the republic are essentially Romanian, and their language was the only Romance tongue native to the former Soviet Union. Moldova has used the Cyrillic alphabet under Soviet rule, but a return to Roman characters - a triumph for the republic - was announced in 1989. Bessarabia, the old name for the region between the Dnestr and the Prut Rivers, bounced back and forth between the Ottoman Empire and Russia for a hundred years, until the Turks ceded it in 1812. Bessarabia became part of Romania after World War I; the Soviets intimidated Romania into giving up the territory in 1940. Largely agricultural, known for production of grapes and wine. An independent republic was declared in 1991. In 1992, a join declaration by Russian and Moldovan presidents envisaged a demarcation line from Transdniestria's separatists, which had developed into self-styled republic.

Russia, formerly central power of U.S.S.R., spans 11 times zones. The first Russian dynasty was founded in Novogrod by the Viking Rurik in 862. 1613-1917 the Romanov dynasty builds upon the old Muscovite empire, extending its rule to Black Sea and Pacific Ocean. After the Bolshevik Revolution the USSR was formed. The Russian Republic is officially a federation, and smaller groups, like Tatars, Bashkirs, have their own autonomous republics within it. In practice however Russians, who make 80% of the population, rule the roost. Though reliant on imports of food, Russia has vast mineral wealth, with enormous untapped oil reserves. Some large deposits lie within the autonomous republics of minority peoples - what can be a potential conflict.

The Tajiks are descendants of Iranian peoples and were once part of the Persian Empire. Alexander the Great also conquered the region. Tajikistan is the only former Soviet Union republic with an Iranian language. For several years following the Russian Revolution, Central Asians waged and finally lost a guerrilla war against Soviet regime. Tajikistan became a union republic in 1929. It has a highest birthrate in the former Soviet Union. Rising above Tajikistan's high altitude landscape is Communism Peak, at 7495m (24,590 feet), the highest point in Soviet Union. Though river valleys account for less than a tenth of republic's territory, they are home to 85 percent of the population. Tajikistan declared independence in Sept.1991.

Nearly 90% of the Turkiestan is a Kara Kum desert, whose emptiness gives a second lowest population density after Kazakhstan in the former Soviet Union. The Turkmen were pastoral nomads organized into numerous tribes at times ruled by neighbouring empires. Russia invaded in the late XIX century. Turkmenistan became a union republic in 1924 despite internal disputes and a lack of national identity. The arable land has more then tripled by building the Kara Kum Canal, begun in the 1950s and still being expanded. Main occupation is agricultural products including cotton and maize. It is reach in minerals, oil, coal, sulphur and is also famous for its carpets, Turkoman horses and Karakul sheep. In 1990 Turkmenistan adopted declaration of sovereignty followed by declaration of independence in Oct. 1991.

Its plains account for 3% territory, but Ukraine holds 50 million people, nearly 20% of former Soviet Union. Ukraine's history entwines eastern and western threads. In 988 a Kievan prince imported Byzantine Christianity, from which evolved Russian Orthodoxy. Polish rule in the XV and XVI century exposed Ukraine to European culture. Warrior adventurers called Cossacks became a powerful, largely autonomous force in eastern Ukraine during the 1500s. Russia dominated the region after 1667. This Slavic nation has great potential with huge coal deposits, and heavy industries. With vast tracts of fertile soil it could become a major exporter of grain.
