Russia, formerly central power of U.S.S.R., spans 11 times zones. The first Russian dynasty was founded in
Novgorod by the Viking Rurik in 862. 1613-1917 the Romanov dynasty builds upon the old Muscovite empire, extending its rule to Black Sea and Pacific Ocean. After the Bolshevik Revolution the USSR was formed. The Russian Republic is officially a federation, and smaller groups, like Tatars, Bashkirs, have their own autonomous republics within it. In practice however Russians, who make 80% of the population, rule the roost. Though reliant on imports of food, Russia has vast mineral wealth, with enormous untapped oil reserves. Some large deposits lie within the autonomous republics of minority
