Latvians descend from ancient Balts and speak one of two surviving Baltic languages (Lithuanian is the other). The population is predominantly Lutheran, with a significant Roman Catholic minority. A coastal plain punctuated by hills, Latvia fell to Germanic invaders in the 1200s. Poland and Sweden divided the country in the early 1600s. Russia, elbowing in to gain a Baltic Sea "window" held all Latvia by 1795. Latvia was independent between the World Wars. Like Estonia and Lithuania. Latvia was independent between the World Wars.
