Forest cover a third of Belarus whose landscape mixes hills and flatlands. The Belorussians, a Slavic people, have never ruled themselves in modern times. Kiev held the region until 1240; Lithuania and Poland governed into the 18th century; Russian rule began in 1772. The World War II brutalized the republic, which lost a quarter of its population, and virtually destroyed its economy. Now produces machinery, electrical equipment, flax and potatoes. An independent republic was declared in 1991.

• Ethnic groups: Belarusian 77.8%; Russian 13.2%; Polish 4.1%; Ukrainian 2.9%; other 2%.
• Religion: predominantly Belarusian Orthodox; with Roman Catholic minority.
• Gross National Product: $2,160 per capita(1994).
